Deep Prayer
Jonah 1:17-2:10
by Tan Huai Tze

In the belly of the fish, Jonah wrestled in prayer with God, giving us a model to do the same: He recognizes that it is God who put him there, he agonises over his situation, he revises the goodness and grace of God, and it all culminates in praise and deliverance.

Fleeing God
Jonah 1:1-17
by Tan Huai Tze

God tells Jonah to go to Nineveh to call them out for their sin. However, Jonah refuses and flees God's command because he did not fully grasp grace. God pursues Jonah through the storm and the actions of the pagan sailors. In response, Jonah does one noble thing. He sacrifices himself so that the sailors can be saved. This points forward to Jesus, the true and better Jonah who sacrificed himself that we may all be saved.
